Une soirée captivante s’annonçait ce vendredi soir de fin d’été avec un duel entre le New York Liberty et le Seattle Storm. Sur le terrain, le public avait l’opportunité d'admirer pas moins de sept joueuses ayant brillé aux Jeux Olympiques de Paris. Pour New York, Sabrina Ionescu et Breanna Stewart (USA), Leonie Fiebich et Nyara Sabally (Allemagne) étaient alignées. Du côté de Seattle, les stars étaient également nombreuses avec Jewell Loyd (USA), Gabby Williams (France), Ezi Magbegor et Sami Whitcomb (Australie). À ces joueuses olympiques s'ajoutaient deux All-Stars de renom : Jonquel Jones pour New York et Nneka Ogwumike pour Seattle, promettant un spectacle de haut niveau.
Ce match, le troisième de la deuxième partie de saison après la trêve olympique, faisait suite à une victoire à domicile du Storm contre Atlanta (85-81). Seattle pouvait également compter sur le retour de Gabby Williams, la Franco-Américaine fraîchement re-signée après avoir décroché une médaille d'argent avec l'équipe de France à Paris. Ce soir, l’objectif de Seattle était clair : battre New York, leader du championnat, pour valider son ticket pour les playoffs à dix matchs de la fin de la saison régulière. Sinon, il leur fallait espérer une défaite d'Atlanta face à Las Vegas.
Le Liberty, fort d'un impressionnant bilan de 26 victoires pour seulement six défaites, cherchait à se racheter après une récente défaite contre les Sparks de Los Angeles. Coach Noelle Quinn du Storm avertissait en amont : ce soir, l’équipe new-yorkaise serait bien plus redoutable, avec une Sabrina Ionescu attendue plus agressive et efficace.
Avant le coup d'envoi, Breanna Stewart fut honorée par le public de Seattle, une reconnaissance de ses années passées au sein de la franchise (2016-2022) durant lesquelles elle mena le Storm à deux titres (2018 et 2020).
Le premier quart-temps fut un feu d’artifice offensif. Les deux équipes se rendaient coup pour coup, chacune marquant plus de 25 points, avec New York menant d’un point seulement (27-26). L’atmosphère électrique à la Climate Pledge Arena était entretenue par des actions éclatantes et une grande vitesse de jeu des deux côtés. Seattle, mené par Skylar Diggins-Smith, prit rapidement l’ascendant.
Le début du deuxième quart fut plus difficile pour Seattle, New York démarrant sur un 11-0, avec Breanna Stewart en chef d’orchestre. Stewart, en forme éclatante, semait la panique dans les rangs de son ancienne équipe, obligeant Seattle à prendre deux temps morts successifs. Cependant, le Storm répondit avec un retour en force, inscrivant dix points consécutifs, dont plusieurs grâce à Skylar Diggins-Smith. Les deux trois-points successifs de Jewell Loyd donnèrent ensuite l’avantage à Seattle, et la foule, avec 15 800 spectateurs, fit trembler le Climate Pledge arena
À la pause, Seattle menait 51-49, un score et une intensité digne d'un match de playoffs. Skylar Diggins-Smith dominait pour le Storm avec 14 points, suivie de Nneka Ogwumike (11) et Jewell Loyd (8). Breanna Stewart était inarrêtable pour New York, inscrivant 22 points à 63,6 % de réussite, avec Nyara Sabally ajoutant 7 points.
La deuxième mi-temps s’ouvrit avec des défenses plus resserrées et un jeu plus physique. Les fautes augmentaient, et le rythme offensif des deux équipes ralentissait. L’arrivée de Geno Smith, quarterback des Seahawks, pour assister à la deuxième partie de ce match serré, enthousiasma les spectateurs.
New York reprit l'avantage dans le troisième quart-temps, mené par un trois-points décisif de Sabrina Ionescu. Le dernier quart-temps vit New York creuser l'écart, avec Stewart et Ionescu en pleine forme. Un moment clé se produisit à 1:57 de la fin lorsque Seattle revint à six points, mais un trois-points de Fiebich et deux lancers francs réussis par Ionescu scellèrent la victoire de New York, 98-85.
Breanna Stewart, avec 32 points, 5 rebonds, et 6 passes décisives, fut la joueuse du match pour New York, bien soutenue par Ionescu (25 points, 8 rebonds, 8 passes) et Fiebich (12 points). Pour Seattle, Skylar Diggins-Smith brilla avec 26 points et 7 passes décisives.
Malgré cette défaite, Seattle décroche sa place en playoffs à neuf journées de la fin de la saison régulière, grâce à la défaite d'Atlanta contre Las Vegas (83-72). En conférence de presse, l’entraîneuse Noelle Quinn se montra fière de ses joueuses, qui ont su redresser un bilan de 11 victoires la saison précédente pour se qualifier cette année. Le Storm se prépare maintenant à affronter le Connecticut Sun ce dimanche pour une série de trois matchs consécutifs à l'extérieur, avant de revenir à domicile le samedi suivant pour affronter le Mercury de Diana Taurasi.

SEATTLE STORM SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT DESPITE 98-85 LOSS TO THE LIBERTY
A thrilling Friday night matchup marked the end of summer as the New York Liberty took on the Seattle Storm. The game featured no fewer than seven players who had competed in the Paris Olympics. Representing New York were Sabrina Ionescu (USA), Breanna Stewart (USA), Leonie Fiebich (Germany), and Nyara Sabally (Germany). Seattle’s roster included Jewell Loyd (USA), Gabby Williams (France), Ezi Magbegor (Australia), and Sami Whitcomb (Australia). Adding to the star power were All-Stars Jonquel Jones for New York and Nneka Ogwumike for Seattle, setting the stage for a high-caliber showdown.
This was the third game in the second half of the season following the Olympic break, and Seattle was coming off a home win against the Atlanta Dream (85-81). The Storm welcomed back Gabby Williams, the Franco-American recently re-signed after winning a silver medal with France at the Paris Olympics and earning a spot in the Olympic All-Star Five.
Seattle aimed to secure a playoff spot with 10 regular-season games remaining by defeating New York, the league leader. If a win wasn’t in the cards, they hoped for an Atlanta loss to Las Vegas.
The Liberty, boasting an impressive record of 26 wins and only six losses, were eager to bounce back after a recent defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks. Storm coach Noelle Quinn warned that tonight’s New York team would be much more formidable, with Sabrina Ionescu expected to be more aggressive and effective.
Before the tip-off, Breanna Stewart was honored by the Seattle crowd, acknowledging her years with the franchise (2016-2022) during which she led the Storm to two championships (2018 and 2020).

Stewart, in brilliant form, wreaked havoc on her former team, forcing Seattle to call two timeouts in quick succession. However, the Storm responded with a strong comeback, scoring ten consecutive points, several of which came from Skylar Diggins-Smith.
Two back-to-back three-pointers from Jewell Loyd then gave Seattle the lead, and the crowd of 15,800 fans shook the Climate pledge arena.
At halftime, Seattle led 51-49, a score worthy of a playoff game. Skylar Diggins-Smith led the Storm with 14 points, followed by Nneka Ogwumike (11) and Jewell Loyd (8). Breanna Stewart was unstoppable for New York, scoring 22 points on 63.6% shooting, with Nyara Sabally adding 7 points.
The second half opened with tighter defenses and more physical play. Fouls increased, and the offensive rhythm of both teams slowed. The arrival of Geno Smith, the Seahawks' quarterback, to watch the second half of this close and hard-fought game delighted the spectators.
New York regained the lead in the third quarter, capped by a crucial three-pointer from Sabrina Ionescu. The final quarter saw New York widen the gap, with Stewart and Ionescu in top form. A key moment came at 1:57 left in the game when Seattle closed the deficit to six points, but a three-pointer from Fiebich and two successful free throws from Ionescu sealed New York’s victory, 98-85.
