Opposés pour la quatrième fois de leur histoire, les Huskies et les Wildcats avaient chacun un bilan de deux victoires et une défaite avant ce match, qui marquait également les débuts des deux équipes dans la Conférence Big Ten.
Après une défaite décevante dans l'Apple Cup face à leurs rivaux de Washington State, les Huskies avaient à cœur de rebondir devant leur public.

À la reprise, Northwestern convertit enfin sa première troisième tentative sur une course de Jack Lausch, mais leur progression s'arrête là. Washington, bien que dominant, perd la balle sur un mauvais snap, offrant à Northwestern une opportunité de revenir dans le match.
